Mary Ellen Ruszovan

Born February 13, 1931 in Capefair, Missouri. Died at home in Lincoln, CA on March 5th, 2007. She is survived by daughter Val Ruszovan; sons Greg Ruszovan and Brian Ruszovan; granddaughters Stephanie Ruszovan and Katie Ruszovan; sisters Exie Cope, Margaret Liddle, and Mona Ragsdale; and brother Onal Cope. She was married for over 50 years to William Ruszovan, who died in 2005.

Mary was raised in Missouri, and after receiving her R.N. from Trinity Lutheran School of Nursing in St. Louis Missouri, left for California. There she met her husband and followed his career across the country. After raising her children, and finally settling in Sacramento, Mary truly began her professional career as a registered nurse, eventually serving as Supervisor/Manager of the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) and the Ambulatory Care unit for many years, and as Director of Surgical Services at the now closed American River Hospital in Carmichael, California.

During her professional years, Mary helped found and served as president of both the Recovery Room Nurses Association of Sacramento, and the Post Anesthesia Nursing Association of California. She also helped found and served as Secretary for the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses; and served on the American Board of Post Anesthesia Nurses, helping to develop national standards for accreditation in PACU field. She retired from nursing in 1993.

Admired for her professionalism, strength and will, she fought a 13 year battle against cancer with unbending optimism and a great appreciation of life.

A nursing scholarship fund is being established in her name, and contributions would be welcome in lieu of flowers. Please contact the family at 916-452-0469
